Loris Elementary School is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. The mission of Loris Elementary is to provide a globally competitive education that empowers students to achieve academic and personal goals and lay the foundation for students to become productive, self-sufficient and responsible citizens in the 21st century. Through the hard work of our staff, students and parents we have continued to strive to be the best that we can be.
Students in grades K-5 receive specifically planned instruction in ELA and Math. Reading Interventionists are used to provide small group instruction for students who need more intensive reading support. The planning is strategic and differentiated with the intent to increase student learning and make academic gains which are measured by the use of Measure of Academic Progress (MAP).
Staff participated in monthly professional development sessions that included Everyday Math, CORE Reading Academy, connecting Imagine It to SC State Standards as well as integrating technology into the curriculum.
Students and staff participated in community projects including Horry County Solid Waste Authority Recycling, Relay for Life, United Way, Salvation Army Canned Food Bank, Box Tops for Education, and Jump Rope for Heart. We also offer several events where parents and students come together in our school. Those events are Breakfast with Dads and Muffins with Mom as well as our monthly family reading nights. For the past ten years we have partnered with St. Stephens Episcopal Church with a mentoring program called “Kids Hope”.
Loris Elementary continues to strive to create an energetic learning environment where students are academically challenged and will become lifelong learners. The school received a school report card rating of good for the 2017-18 school year. Loris Elementary scored above the state in the area of math with 54.20% of students scoring met or exceeding grade level expectations. LES also outperformed the state’s average in science and social studies.
The number of parents attending conferences and after school programs have decreased in the past two years. To improve the parent-school partnership we feel the need to hire a Home-School Coordinator that will support the school in having more parents become involved in the education of their children here at LES. This staff member will help support workshops designed to assist with reading, math, technology and assessments.
We are a school of 827 students 38 regular education teachers, 4 interventionists, and 8 SPED teachers have been provided an allocation of 1.5 for curriculum coaches that will support our teachers in research based instructional practices. We will use Title 1 funds to increase the allocation to 2. One instructional coach will be used for primary grades and the other will be used for elementary grades. Each of the instructional coaches is responsible for maintaining a data wall for primary and elementary. The data that is included for elementary is SCREADY, MAP, and SCPASS. The primary data wall includes MAP for grade 2 and DIBELS for Grades K-2 as well as PALS Data for CD.
Students who are identified receive academic assistance through interventions and all students are exposed to teaching strategies that improve engagement. Our teachers are continually participating in professional development, professional learning communities (PLC), and grade level planning for content.
