Carver Elementary School is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment through the implementation of our new school vision: Carver students will utilize problem solving, collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking skills to make a positive and significant impact on their future and the future of our ever changing world. Our mission is to provide our students with engaging, challenging, and authentic real-world learning experiences.
We demonstrate our vision and mission by challenging our students with best practices to reach their full potential and by the continuous professional development of our teachers.
Our teachers at Carver utilize an integrated standard-based curriculum that emphasizes technology and STEM. During the 2016-2017 school year, Carver attained the AdvancED STEM accreditation. Our school has also become a STEM magnet school and has accepted students from across our district since the 2017-2018 school year. Technology resources used to engage students include one to one chrome books in 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grade, a portable wireless lap top and iPad lab, software programs, internet resources, computer lab activities, SMART Boards, SMART Response Systems, Flash Masters, and Streamline Videos. Carver has a balanced language arts program providing a literacy lab, Reading Renaissance, Orton Gillingham Program and “Write from the Beginning”, a writing program that is used in K-4. In math, a variety of hands-on programs such as MDC Math, Everyday Math, Everyday Counts Calendar Math and Math 4 Today are used. In Science, we are focused on STEM with the Project Lead the Way Program and teacher made Project Based Learning Units. Carver also has the only SMART STEM lab in the state, which is used to develop engineering and math skills. We also have a Biomedical focus in our Science Lab. We are proud of our strong history of academic success.
At Carver Elementary, we also have various programs outside the academic world to focus on the development of the whole child. Students participate in the computer lab, science lab, art, music, and physical education weekly. Our parents and community are also significantly involved. Carver has an active PTO and School Improvement Council. Volunteers can be found serving as tutors, mentors, and working with our Positive Behavior System (Bear Bucks), just to name a few areas. Carver has numerous contributors and community, business, and college partners, including our Faith Based Volunteers and Good News Club. Carver offers many enrichment opportunities for our students. A variety of school clubs are available throughout the year. These include the Engineering Club, Bears Strong through STEAM Club, Art, Tech Detectives, Carver GEMS, Sports of All Sorts, Triple R, Chorus, and an after school MAD Science club. Leadership opportunities offered include Safety Patrols and the Morning Show. Character programs such as Steps to Respect, Core Essentials, and Character Counts are used. Carver also has strong student recognition programs, including Terrific Kids, Principals, Celebrity Student, Honor Roll, Perfect Attendance, Bus of the Month and Reading Renaissance awards. Students are also involved in many service projects throughout the year. These include Harvest Hope Food Drive, Relay for Life, Pasta for Pennies, Jump Rope for Heart, Toys for Tots, and Florence Humane Society. Finally, we continue to offer food packs, with the assistance of an organization called Help 4 Kids, to students who may need something extra to eat over the weekend.
At Carver Elementary, we believe the school, family, and community must share the educational responsibility of our young. Thank you for all of your support in helping make Carver “A Great Place To Learn”.
