By putting Students First, Florence 1 Schools and Lucy T. Davis are developing students with world class skills to meet the standards outlined in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. The mission of Lucy T. Davis is To Educate, Prepare, Inspire! This mission maintains our motivation to create learning experiences that require students to think critically and creatively, while collaborating and communicating with others.
As a continuous learning community, teachers participate in professional developments that focus on improving classroom instructional methods. This school year teachers attended sessions on Blended Learning (for our 1:1 initiative), Google Classroom, Orton Gillingham (all K-3 teachers and Enhanced Learning teachers), Discovery Education, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination), & Read to Succeed, as well as others. To plan and provide targeted differentiated instruction, teachers received training on the following assessments: Link It!, STAR Reading & Math, and DRA.
To ensure student success as members of a global community, we strive to maintain a learning environment that encourages each student to reach their greatest potential with world class knowledge & skills. This year all students received instruction in the Makerspace Lab, which incorporated elements of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. In the lab, students participated in activities such as 3-Dimensional printing, coding, robotics, animation, & engineering. While maintaining the focus on creating global learners students also attended Spanish as a related art. To challenge all students, we offer a variety of academic programs such as small group instruction, intervention support, gifted & talented services, and special education programs.
While promoting academics, we also focus on developing the whole child in a culture that teaches respect and responsibility in order to develop productive members of the community. We continue to promote awareness for community and good health through Good News Club, Hoops for Heart, American Red Cross Blood Drive, Salvation Army Food Drive, Pasta for Pennies, LTD Clothing Closet and Socks for Shelters. Our PBIS Owl Loot incentive program recognizes positive student characteristics and behaviors. Each nine weeks students can shop at the Owl Loot Store purchasing various items, crafts & activities.
At Lucy T. Davis, we believe in schools, families, and communities working together to shape the innovators and leaders of the 21st century. Collaboration between students, teachers, and parents is at the heart of our school. Our parents and community provide continuous support for our instructional programs as well as meeting the needs of our students and school. Our School Improvement Council collaborates to assess our needs and promotes strategies & programs that will address those needs.
