McCrorey-Liston School of Technology (MLST) is preparing all students to develop world class skills and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing students with a safe and nurturing environment. MLST”s curriculum, in collaboration with its school and community, fosters close partnerships for student success. It is through these types of partnerships that the school’s vision to “Soar Above All Expectations” continues to build a strong sense of community.
For the 2018-2019 school term, the theme for MLST was “L.I.T with S.W.A.G” (Leaders in Teaching with Students With AVID Goals). McCrorey-Liston continued to implement AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) into its instructional program. The AVID framework known as WICOR (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, Reading) continued to be integrated into classroom instruction as teachers continued to utilize the AVID Strategy of the Month to include instructional best practices into the curriculum. Students and staff immersed themselves in best practices in the areas of instruction, culture, leadership, and systems. Staff members also continued to promote the importance of student’s having not only a Growth Mindset, but ensuring the other Academic Mindsets (Self Efficacy, Relevance, and Sense of Belonging) were in place as students were empowered to set goals and grow socially, emotionally, and academically. With a continued focus on College and Career Readiness, students participated in a variety of activities that spotlighted colleges and careers including college tours, AVID Day, and showcasing college and careers on the morning news show.
The Jr. Beta Club of McCrorey-Liston was recognized as 2019 state winners at the South Carolina Beta Convention in Myrtle Beach, SC. One student placed third in Mathematics. Another student placed third in English Language Arts. Two students placed fourth- one in Poetry and the other in Mixed Media. MLST also earned Jr Beta Club Awards for Two-Dimensional Design and Service Learning Showcase. McCrorey-Liston earned a first place Jr Beta Club Award for Technology.
In an effort to continue to promote positive school to home relations, McCrorey-Liston hosted several workshops and events which provided parents with information and strategies to build positive relationships and foster academic success. The initiatives (Family Bingo Night, Books and Breakfast, Grandparent’s Luncheon) were designed to foster positive student and family engagement and highlight the ongoing implementation of AVID into instruction.
