Meeting Street Elementary is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by focusing on rigorous academics, implementing an integrated character skills program, and developing partnerships with families and our community.
Meeting Street Elementary opened our doors in August of 2014 as a first of its kind public partnership school. Charleston County Public Schools partnered with Meeting Street Schools to create a neighborhood public school that has the autonomy to design an academic and character program to fit the needs of our community.
We use a suite of research-based curricular programs to ensure that all students are exceeding typical growth and are marching towards true college-readiness benchmarks. We have a balanced literacy program, a tailored math program, and rich science and social studies programs. In addition to providing a college-preparatory curriculum, we have two teachers in every classroom to ensure we are differentiating for our students' needs. We extended the time that our students spend in school by starting with 3 year-olds in our Pre-K program, we have an extended school day that allows our students to be in school until 5:30pm, and we have an extended school year that allows our students to spend more time in school over the summer.
At Meeting Street Elementary we focus on educating the whole child by weaving our research-based character development program into every single aspect of school life and academics. Our Path to Success Skills and Community Commitments are included in all content areas and are explicitly taught and celebrated throughout the week. We embed social-emotional skills into our curriculum and we have wrap-around health and wellness programs at our school to serve all the needs of our students and families.
We love our parents and have a variety of ways we partner with families to be actively involved in our school. We have our weekly school-wide Community Celebration, monthly Parent University workshops, fun monthly parent events, quarterly parent-teacher conferences, and an open-door policy where parents are welcome to observe any time of the day. We also have a build-your-own library program where we give each student a brand-new book to take home and keep every Friday to help build family libraries and promote literacy in the home. In addition, we collaborate with community organizations, such as the Lowcountry Foodbank, MUSC, Be a Mentor, and Green Heart to provide support and enrichment to our students and families.
