Berkeley Middle School (BMS) is a diverse 6th through 8th grade middle school that serves the Moncks Corner community by providing an academic curriculum and extracurricular activities for over 1,250 students. 115 dedicated faculty and staff members work daily to provide our students with a positive learning experience in a safe and caring environment.
Our school is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by challenging them with a rigorous curriculum provided through quality teaching, support and reinforcement from our teachers. Over the course of the last year, nearly 300 students earned high school credit in Algebra 1, English 1, Spanish 1, Keyboarding, and Computer Applications. Students were also provided with opportunities for remediation of specific standards through the use of our ASSIST Labs.
Berkeley Middle School was honored to be one of three middle schools in South Carolina named as a Unified Champion School for the 2017-18 school year! This recognition is a result of our efforts to create an inclusive environment where every student is accepted and respected. The Unified Program at BMS provides students with opportunities in PE, Music, and Art.
During the year, BMS students were recognized for their academic achievement. 2 students were recognized as Duke TIP scholars, 14 were named Junior scholars, and 70 new students were inducted into the National Junior Beta club. BMS was also honored for the third consecutive year as a National Beta School of Merit! In addition, our level 2 social studies team won the gold at the BCSD Quiz Bowl!
STEM opportunities are provided to BMS students through our award-winning Berkeley Middle Technology Club. These students represented BMS at the Palmetto State VEX Competition held in Columbia, SC. Also, as a result of the district's 1:1 initiative, every student has access to their own chromebook which can be used at school and at home.
The BMS performing arts groups had another outstanding year! 14 young musicians were named to the All-County Orchestra, and one was selected to perform in the SC Lowcountry Regional Orchestra. The 6th, 7th and 8th grade orchestras all received superior ratings at the Berkeley County School District Concert Performance Assessment. Our band received two excellent ratings and one student was selected to the All-County and All-Region band. The BMS Choral Department ended the year on a high note by earning two Superior ratings at the Carowinds Music Festival.
BMS is thankful for the continuing support of our business partners including Santee Cooper, Berkeley Electric Cooperative, and Bojangles. Through these partnerships we are able to provide mentoring for our at-risk students, student incentive programs, and technology opportunities.
The administration, faculty and staff of BMS are committed to working with our stakeholders to provide a positive culture and produce successful citizens!
