"Our school is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by including each student in the quest of excellence."
Broome High School experienced another year of growth and success during the 2017-2018 school year. We received local, state and national recognitions in academics, arts, athletics and community service. Lindsay Knox, BHS World Language teacher, was recognized as our teacher of the year. Our students and staff continue to use our 1 to 1 devices to improve our teaching and learning environments. All Broome High School students and staff use laptops daily as a tool to enhance learning.
We continue to focus on increased rigor at BHS by adding additional AP courses and increasing the number of students taking AP courses. We increased participation by 63% and maintained scores above the state and national averages. The College Board named Spartanburg School District Three a Distinguished AP School District.
The Class of 2018 earned over $6.8 million in scholarship awards, the highest amount in school history. Broome High School students earned credit in college level courses through Advanced Placement and Dual Credit. Broome students also attend Daniel Morgan Technology Center (DMTC) where they also earn industry certifications and college credit. Participation in a rigorous curriculum ensures that our students are College and Career Ready.
Other successes this year include: Implementation of our back to school bash. This was a celebration of education in our district. State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman was our keynote speaker. We increased numbers of mentors working with our students, we brought back our community parade to celebrate our homecoming festivities, we earned Distinguished Unit for our JROTC program, increased participation, region championships, district champions and state runner-up in athletics.
Community Service is very important to Broome students and staff. Our school participated in many projects including; flood relief efforts, food pantry donations, Christmas Child sponsorships, Relay of Life and The United Way. We began a new tradition by having a Legacy celebration. During this week we recognized former leaders in our school. Former teachers, board members, student body presidents and former principals were recognized and participated in the Legacy Day activities. During the last half of our Legacy day all students at BHS participated in service projects throughout our community.
Broome staff, students and SIC used the 17-18 school year to plan for implementation of two major initiatives for the 18-19 school year. The first is the AVID program. We will begin the program by offering the AVID elective class to a cohort group of 9th & 10th grade students. The second initiative is called "Centurions Connect." This program will be implemented during our lunch hour each day. Students will be given the opportunity to get extra help, make up assignments, participate in clubs, intramurals and other options during their lunch hour each day. Both initiatives will increase student engagement, increase student achievement and improve our graduation rate.
Broome High School is synonymous with excellence. We seek to be ever-changing and ever-improving in order to meet the needs of all students.
Our guiding principle is: All In. Every Child, Every Day, Whatever it takes!
