J. L. Mann High School is helping all students develop World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina graduate by providing model programs such as our Academy of Math, Science, and Technology. The Academy is just one example of how we have maintained a reputation for academic, extracurricular, and athletic excellence for 53 years.
The 2017-18 school year was one of many accomplishments for the students of J. L. Mann High School. J. L. Mann was recognized as a finalist for the prestigious Palmetto’s Finest Award, the Class of 2018 received over $11.000,000 in higher education scholarships, 49 students were recognized as Palmetto Fellows, and 3 students were recognized as National Merit Finalists. J. L. Mann continued to see an increase in AP Scholars from 159 in 2017 to 183 in 2018.
Two new innovative programs were implemented for the 2017-2018 school year - AP Capstone Diploma and AP + PLTW. Participation in the AP Capstone Diploma program started with 27 students enrolled in the first of two required AP courses. The Power of M, after school transportation and Mann Power tutoring programs continued to be successful in supporting achievement by reducing the number of students failing courses school wide. Additionally, students had the opportunity to achieve academic success by participating in programs such as Accelerate, NewTech@Mann, Magnet, Fine Arts Center, and Golden Strip Career Center.
J.L. Mann High School’s PTSA is one of the largest and most active in the state. This past year the PTSA awarded over $12,000 in mini-grants to teachers, reimbursed teachers over $3,000 worth of classroom supplies, helped pay for a new sprinkler system in the front of the building, and donated over 9,000 volunteer hours.
Patriot Pride was clearly evident during the 2017-2018 Spirit Week during which the student body raised $206,000 to support the Frazee Center in Greenville, SC. J. L. Mann High School had a very successful year in athletics with a combined total of over 900 athletes spread across 36 teams in 24 sports. In the past year, eighteen teams made the playoffs or qualified for state competitions, while twelve teams claimed regional championships. Individually, Mann had over 70 athletes named All Region and three named Region Player of the Year. Mann had twelve All-State players and seven players named to their sports North/South or All-Star games. Additionally, 11 athletes signed to continue their athletic careers at the collegiate level.
Through a combination of past accomplishments and a commitment to improvement, J. L. Mann High School continues to meet the challenges of the 21st century with innovation and enthusiasm!
