Our school is helping all students develop the World Class Skills of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by supporting our school mission: To Believe and Achieve, to Lead and Succeed. We support this mission with our vision to provide a positive, challenging, and enriched learning environment that enables each student to become a lifelong learner, leader, and a responsible citizen with world class knowledge. BSIS values uniqueness, creativity, leadership ability, and educational rights, as well as, the well-being of all students. We demonstrated this during the 2017-2018 school year through our Leader in Me (LIM) focus, RtI/PBIS Initiative, using technology to enrich instruction, our focus on health with the Mary Black Foundation Healthy Schools Initiative and a Kaboom Grant, and many community service projects. The Leader in Me (LIM) focus provided a model for promoting student leadership and 21st century life skills by infusing the 8 Habits of Highly Effective People to teach and reinforce self-discipline, self-reliance, and increase self-confidence. This framework encouraged our students to reach the life and career characteristics of integrity, self-direction, global perspective, perseverance, work ethic and interpersonal skills identified in the Profile of the SC Graduate. BSIS truly built a culture of leadership by receiving their renewed certification as a Lighthouse School. Merging Response to Intervention and Positive Behavior Interventions and support with LIM provided a strong foundation for the success of all student leaders. BSIS teachers worked diligently to implement tech-rich lessons to meet the Profile of the SC Graduate world class skills of creativity, innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving, and knowing how to learn. Our Healthy Schools Initiative emphasized physical fitness and nutrition for students and staff. The Kaboom Grant provided funding to increase students’ physical activity with playground equipment. The community was involved with our Healthy School Initiative as they participated in the BSI Family Fest. By serving the community, BSI leaders had the advantage of real-world experiences. Students made donations of money and time to Hoops and Jump Rope for Heart, toy drive for Upstate Family Resource Center, donated items to the Greater Spartanburg Ministries, and the Humane Society. Community service projects allowed students to reflect on the difference they made in society while gaining a greater understanding of their roles in the community, as well as, the impact of their contributions towards those in need of service.
