Waterway Elementary School is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a safe, caring, and academically challenging learning environment. We provide such an environment through the implementation of our school vision: a medley of cultures and needs in a community of change and progress, to ensure each student a solid foundation that will prepare him or her for further learning through innovative and developmentally appropriate programs.
The 2017-2018 school year was noteworthy at Waterway Elementary. Celebrations were held to recognize the students’ achievements in academics, attendance, and character development. Also, our school participated in many ways to support service learning. Examples include The Salvation Army canned food drive, The United Way, and creating a food pantry for our families. In addition, we utilized many forms of digital content to address student needs. Further, we offered a variety of afterschool clubs to meet the needs of the whole child. Examples include art club, technology club, Rubix Cube club, coding club, cheer club, running club, orange club, and reading club.
Our faculty participated in professional development focusing on instructional strategies to improve student achievement in reading and mathematics. A computer assessment program was utilized to help improve instruction and measure student progress. Teachers collaborated as grade levels and across grade levels to plan standards-based instruction. Many teachers participated in graduate coursework to advance their degrees. Heather Smith was selected as Teacher of the Year for our school. Celecia Greene was selected as our Support Staff Member of the Year.
The hard work and dedication of our parents and volunteers, as well as our outstanding community support, enhanced the mission of the school. Proceeds from our annual school fundraiser were used to purchase many items, including technology resources. A record number of volunteers worked to support our instructional programs.
During the 2018-2019 school year we will work with our parents, community members and the School Improvement Council to help children excel in all areas.
