James Island Elementary School is a neighborhood school that is located in Charleston County. Our goal is to help all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate.
We are a STEAM school. STEAM refers to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematical fields of study. The term is recognized worldwide and describes a hands-on, problem-solving approach to education and curriculum in schools. We infuse STEAM engineering design projects across the curriculum and we are proud to be Charleston County's only STEAM school. It is our goal to empower our students to become 21st-century learners in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Our students learn the curriculum standards through direct instruction, engineering design challenges, and project-based instruction.
James Island Elementary School builds student learning by using outstanding resources. Our students participate in Engaging Creative Minds (ECM) activities. This program allows our students in third, fourth and fifth grades to be a part of an extended STEAM-minded curriculum. ECM provides opportunities for artists to come to our school and work directly with students. Students also participate in various STEAM activities such as creating terrariums, aquariums, barometers, and engaging in a variety of science experiences. Additionally, teachers make use of our outdoor classroom and utilize community and parent volunteers throughout the year.
Students at James Island Elementary School have opportunities to participate in events that reinforce the development of the whole child. We have a school climate PBIS plan that focuses on the positive achievements of our students through Positive Proclamations, Golden Coins and Nine Week Awards recognitions. Our students participate in academic competitions and clubs such as tennis team and chorus.
Our parents, students, and staff are committed to the success of our students. Many partnerships and programs allow for us to make a safe and engaging learning environment for our students.
