Our school is helping all students develop the world class skills and life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by providing a supportive environment for students to become independent and strategic readers and writers across all content areas. Our teachers have participated in extensive training this year focusing on best practices with an emphasis on reading.
The implementation of personalized/blended learning made it possible for students to increase their own critical thinking skills by working on activities that were specifically designed for their instructional level. Many students had“playlists” to work from which allowed for students to work at their own pace on the skills identified in the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate. In addition to these playlists, students also used instructional programs such as Lexia and DreamBox to enhance learning.
Not only has the implementation of personalized/blended learning had an impact on critical thinking skills, but this new concept has promoted collaboration amongst the students. Students are working together in their classrooms and sharing their thoughts and ideas to develop a deeper understanding of the content at hand. In classes that are using this new model, we are beginning to see signs of success based on individual student achievement data. We look forward to the continued success of this model and for our personalized learning expert teachers to continue to support our newest staff members by providing them with professional development.
Our goal is to have self-directed, motivated scholars with real-world problem solving skills.
