Stiles Point Elementary School is helping all students develop the world class skills, life and career characteristics of the Profile of the South Carolina Graduate by ensuring that each child in our school is known and their needs are met. Only then can we close the achievement gap by helping each child reach their full potential.
We will be continuing our dedication to the teaching of the world class skills expected of the South Carolina graduate. We focus on problem solving, critical thinking, and participating in creative, collaborative processes and teamwork. We will continue to address state standards through interrelated studies, understanding that “real life” does not come in “pieces” of math, social interaction, history and geography. Our focus on critical thinking and problem solving has resulted in our school being ranked as “Excellent” multiple times on our state report card.
Strengthening our students in the world class skills of working collaboratively with an emphasis on teamwork is part of our everyday routine at Stiles Point Elementary School. We are continuing to work diligently in developing our students socially. We are in our third year of an Interconnected Systems Framework (ISF) grant to help build our Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) system, while working jointly with the University of South Carolina, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the Charleston Department of Mental Health. Through this grant, we will continue to help our students understand how to treat each other properly, work with each other in a productive and collaborative manner, and to engage our support systems when needed. Our focus is on A-B-C: Act Safely, Be Respectful, and Care for Self, Others, and Property. We are working with our students to help them grow academically and socially so they become citizens that can lead our country in the future.
Stiles Point Elementary School has also been engaged in teaching about communication, information, media and technology throughout this school year. All students in grades 1-5 have received 1:1 digital devices (either an iPad or a Chromebook). Teachers have been delivering instruction that demonstrates positive digital citizenship and the skills needed in order to engage responsibly when using the internet and its various types of social and educational media outlets. In order to accomplish this, many of our teachers have completed or are engaged in the multi-year Innovation and Digital Learning Cohort provided by our District. Our students are benefitting from having consistent, personal access to DreamBox (mathematics program) and Lexia (reading program), as well as other online resources. These are programs that allow students to be challenged continually throughout the year in both math and reading. Our student success is measured one student at a time, according to their specific needs. Our school data reflect the benefits from the use of these devices in strategic ways. According to our MAP scores, we had at least 65% of our students meet their yearly growth goals in five out of the six grade levels assessed. This percentage was the target goal set by our district.
Stiles Point Elementary School will continue to thrive because of the expertise of the teachers and staff in providing a world class education. The dedication and determination of our community in supporting our efforts is the key in this endeavor.
