Harbor View Elementary School works every day to make sure students develop the world class skills expected of South Carolina graduates. Harbor View Elementary School works each day to make sure the needs of all students are met and that the achievement gap is closed. We will continue to teach South Carolina State standards while integrating real-world skills to ensure that Harbor View students are productive members of society.
We are continuing to focus on communication, information and media technology. Harbor View Elementary School is a 1:1 iPad school. Every student has access to an iPad throughout the school day. Students use the iPads to access adaptive digital learning resources such as Dreambox (math) and Lexia (reading) as well as others programs. While using Dreambox our students completed 97,000 lessons and mastered an average of 16.7 standards. These adaptive digital learning resources allow for personalized instruction for the students that result in strong educational gains. Many teachers have completed or are participating in a digital learning cohort to improve their educational technology skills. Teachers and students consistently use their iPads to complete research, collaborate on projects and presentations, as well as give feedback on presentations. Teachers also use this digital technology to communicate with parents and share student work with them.
Students and teachers continue to focus on critical thinking and problem solving skills during instruction. Students are often tasked with problems that require complex solutions and multi-step approaches. Teachers require students to cite evidence when solving a problem or defending an argument. Students participate in field trip opportunities such as the South Carolina Aquarium, Charles Towne Landing, and other landmarks in South Carolina. Authors and other presenters are invited to the school to expose our students up to new ideas and experiences and deepen their critical thinking and problem solving skills. Over 35% of our 3rd-5th grade students participate in our district gifted and talented program (SAJL). Students that participate in this program are taught a specific curriculum that challenges and stimulates their thinking.
As a school community, Harbor View Elementary works to instill world class skills, world class knowledge, and life/career characteristics in our students. These efforts, and well developed work habits, will lead our students through middle school and high school.
Eventually, our students will be South Carolina graduates and will apply the knowledge learned at school, and beyond school, so that they will be productive members of our society. The teachers and staff at Harbor View Elementary take pride in developing the type of environment that allows this to occur. Our vibrant and involved community supports the needs of our school and our focus is on educating all students.
